Cinco de Mayo – Tequila Mockingbird- two classics

Hot Spots Tonight

You only have to be in Puebla, Mexico on Cinco de Mayo once in your lifetime to realize- you’ll never do that again. Cinco de Mayo commemorates a fierce battle at Puebla on May 5, 1862. Our experience consisted of watching tipsy men in the town-square with shot guns, shooting at the sky, throwing back way too much tequila, followed by more shooting of the guns.   The colorful re-enactment is not for the feint of heart.

For a lot more fun, and closer to home, here are two favorite hot spots tonight for Cinco de Mayo merriment in San Francisco.

You’ve driven by it a 100 times. Today is the day to try Colibri Mexican bistro, located in Union Square, right across the street from the A.C.T. Theater on Geary Boulevard. The attractive restaurant boasts superior Central Mexican fare with emphasis on fresh ingredients. The bar is both lively and fun- with terrific happy hour Bar Bites, interesting Tequila Flights and five-dollar margaritas. Check out yummy Guacamole, prepared tableside, with soft hand-made corn tortillas instead of tortilla chips. Don’t miss the Ceviche or the Jicama salad, with avocado, citrus wedges, cilantro and a divine chile piquin dressing. Address: 438 Geary Street CA California 94102, between Mason and Taylor, across the street from the Curran and A.C.T. Theaters.

No Driving on Cinco de Mayo

Hop on the MUNI 38 Geary to get to Tommy’s Mexican restaurant and famed Tequila Bar – a mere 15 minutes away on Geary.

A real hot spot, teeming with singles of all ages, Tommy’s’ started celebrating Cinco de Mayo yesterday. A recent claim to fame- a Tommy’s margarita was nominated, by the sleek 20’s-something bible, 7×7 magazine, as one of “the top 100 things to eat and drink in San Francisco before one dies”.             Put that on your bucket list.

Tequila Mockingbird

If you grow weary of Geary and are tired of all things tequila, end the evening on an upbeat, less frenetic note. Climb aboard the 38 Geary and take it to Parker Street. Walk a few blocks to Swank Cocktail Club the interesting bar located at the Laurel Hotel. Points for ambiance, good mixologists, light fare. Sometimes a cool and calm enviornment – with large screen TVs for viewing major events. Have the barkeep call a cab for you. Buenos Noches.
